This easy to follow Guide will show you how to either:
- Change primary owner on Google My Business to another user already on the GMB profile
- Transfer ownership to a new owner (not on the GMB profile yet)
Changing Primary Owner on Google My Business
These instructions apply if you wish for another user already on the GMB profile to be the primary owner. Otherwise, follow Transfer ownership instructions.
Important: Only users with “Primary Owner” status can change the Primary Owner.
How to Change Google My Business Primary Owner Steps
- On your computer, sign in to Google My Business
- In the menu on the left, click Users
- As the “Manage users” section opens up, find the user you intend to make the “Primary Owner”, and at the end of the row, you click on the down arrow to open the user role’s dropdown menu.
- You choose of course the “Primary owner” option
- A Pop-up box will appear to confirm the “Primary Owner” change, click on “Transfer”.

Your user profile gets “demoted” to “Owner” and the new Primary owner should receive an email confirming the new “Primary Owner” role assigned.

Transfer Ownership of Google My Business
If you need to transfer Primary ownership over to a new user/owner, for example, you sold the business or have a new partner.
How to Transfer Google My Business Ownership Steps
- Add a New Owner to a Google My Business Profile
- Transfer primary ownership to the new owner
- Remove your user from the profile(s) (if applicable)
Important: Only users with “Primary Owner” status can transfer the ownership.
Step 1 – Add a New Owner to a Google My Business Profile
- In the menu on the left, click Users.
- At the top right, click on the icon and then “Add users”.
- Enter the name or email address of the new owner, then click “Choose a role” » click on “Owner”. Note: The new user must have an account with Google.
- Click “Invite”.
Notes:
The new owner will receive an email to accept the invitation to become an “Owner” user.
When an invitation is accepted, the current owners of the profile are notified through email.
Step 2 – Transfer Primary Ownership
- In the left-hand side menu, click “Users”

- Find the user you’d like to choose as the new Primary Owner. To the right of their name, click on the dropdown menu and select “Primary owner”

- A Pop-up box will open to confirm the transfer of the “Primary Owner” role, click on “Transfer” to complete the transfer.
- Then press “Done”. Primary ownership transfers to the new owner immediately.
